THE CAGE

by Dale Simmons (March 1984)

Calm yourself, little bird,

How well I see your plight.

With wicker bars surrounding,

You no more soar in flight.

Please, forgive your jailers,

Their blind eyes cannot see.

Your gaze toward the window,

Your longing to be free.

Many pardons must I ask,

For all my species sake.

You see, we're truly human,

What we don't have, we take.

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
